What to expect

Guernsey was occupied during the second world war by Nazi Germany from 30 June 1940 until 9 May 1945.

9 May 2025 marks 80 years of liberation from the occupying forces.

The island and Guernsey people did not recover straight away. Mines, gun, equipment and machinery used by the Germans was removed but the many bunkers that housed the equipment remains clearly visible on the landscape today as the concrete fortifications were too large to destroy. They are stark reminders of this incredibly challenging period of the island’s history.

Your driver guide will take you to some of the concrete fortification on the island and on the way tell you tales of the occupation that have been recounted by local families over the last 80 years of liberation: real life tales of heroism and triumph over adversity.

You will also have time to visit the German Underground Hospital which was used by the German occupying forces as a hospital and an ammunition store.

What to do when the tour finishes:

The tour ends at the Stand A of the bus terminus at 14:00 hrs – from here you can explore the quaint town of St Peter Port or adventure further afield.

Regular buses depart the terminus and a taxi rank is at the Town Church.

Staying in town?

The cobbled streets of the High Street, Smith Street and Mill Street will take you to boutique shops and cafes/restaurants serving delicious food.

A short walk up Mill Street will take you to the Art for Guernsey Gallery – showcasing both local and international artists.

A walk south along the seafront will take you to Castle Cornet or, if you walk further south, to the recently renovated Vallette area of Town. Drop in to the Underground Military Museum or walk further along to the Victorian Bathing Pools where you can swim or just grab a coffee and a snack and take in the panoramic views of the other islands of Guernsey.

A walk up Smith Street and on to Candie road will take you to Candie Gardens. Here you can visit the Guernsey Museum at Candie which hosts a Guernsey history museum along with art collections, hands-on activities for Children, a café and much more.

This tour requires a minimum of 2 passengers to operate. If we do not reach this minimum capacity, the tour will be cancelled and any bookings will be fully refunded.
